Found the keys!

Well, well, well…. where have we been?

B U S Y  A S  A L L  G E T  O U T

We find ourselves steadily rounding the first corner of 2016. Our lives are just flying by… It’s almost as if we’ve forgotten to update the website! We can’t have that now, can we? Where did we leave off… The sublimely dark and majestic frequencies of HKE and t e l e p a t h ‘s split floated us into the icy peaks and valleys of spectral bliss of Gardener’s latest..

which is still available, by the way. Trust your ears!

What’s next?

Quite a few fun little things. We are so very excited to announce the next two releases!

First off- Forage. A new record by Drape!

Forage Digi

You may remember them from late summer 2013’s EVENSONGS– or their beautiful expansive LP on Infraction– or their stone cold classic split tape with Odd Nosdam. Maybe you are new to the Drape bandwagon- in which case, you’re in for a treat. Drape have shared with us a new video for Phosphenes, the second cut from Forage, directed by Brett Walters.

Seems our friends in Drape are a bit more restless then the last time we saw them.. The glacial, monolithic slabs of smeared sound have been replaced by smaller movements- more concise brush strokes- micro-sonic flourishes. We think the result is nothing short of phenomenal. Forage is the kind of record that you can fall asleep to, start your morning with, or use as a study/work aid. Odd Nosdam’s mastering helped bring Drape’s sonic worlds to the forefront, and we are still discovering new details hidden away in the mix with every listen. We can’t wait for you to have your own experiences with it.

Forage will be available Friday, May 20th on compact cassette (limited to 100) and digital formats.

Next order of business- You might have noticed our old pal Bracken has a new record coming out on Home Assembly Music. We are pleased to announce that we have partnered up with them to  release High Passes on the beloved cassette format.

Seems quite a few of you really dug his last record, Exist ResistWe sold out of 2 runs of tapes, Norman Records called it the best album of 2014 (and sold out of a vinyl pressing) and it currently hold the honors as the most-streamed album on the BARO catalog. How to follow up? With a new collection of songs that give everything that Mr. Adams has ever done a run for their money. Trust us, it’s that good.

The LP is available to pre-order from Norman Records, and the tape will be coming in the next few months. Follow us on Twitter to stay current with updates and pollute your feed with Hardvapour.

Last but not least- we are very happy to finally be entering the digital frontier! By the end of the summer, most of the BARO catalog will be available for streaming on all major platforms- you will be able to listen to your favorite BARO classics when you are away from your tape collection!

Until next time!

Falling into place.

Fellow beings of light, greetings from BARO Chicago HQ! It’s been a while since there’s been any sort of an update here. What can we say? Life. We’d like to give you a bit of insight into what’s going on around here, past, present, & future.

A few weeks ago we released Benoit Pioulard’s magnificent two-part opus Stanza I & II in collaboration with Portland, OR record shop/label, Beacon Sound.

The Stanza I & II  collection is the companion piece to Benoit Pioulard’s excellent full length released earlier this year on Kranky, Sonnet. Together, they form an equilateral triangle of decayed guitar ambiance, faded polaroids, and wistful contemplation.

“Stanza is, for the most part, muted and thoughtful– an afternoon lying in the grass on a beautiful day near the end of summer. Stanza II is the steady crawl of orange light over the earth as evening approaches– it steadily grows more mysterious and plaintive, with the emotionalism of Meluch’s guitar surfacing more frequently in the mix as the the sun dips out of sight. The tones that Meluch has struck here, as well as the conciseness of his phrases, particularly in the last three pieces of Stanza II, are marks of a master. Stanza and Stanza II are all of a piece– together they are ultimately even more melodically, harmonically captivating than their precursor.” -Matthew Sweeney, Foreign Accents

We couldn’t have phrased it any more beautifully ourselves.

These high-bias type-II cassettes are limited to 200, complete with 4-panel fold out j-card with artwork from both EPs and housed in a heavy card stock slipcover. This is an amazingly beautiful package (if we do say so ourselves) and we have very limited amounts left, so act fast!

Looking ahead, we are excited to officially announce our fiftieth release, one that’s been in the works for quite some time.

It’s no secret that we here at BARO are massive fans of UK-based label Dream Catalogue. DC label supergroup 2814’s 新しい日の誕生 currently stands as one of our top releases of the year so far, and we have something very special in store for its fans.

BARO is pleased to announce GATEWAY アセンション, a split release between HKE and

t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者

Gateway アセンション cover

GATEWAY アセンション will be released on November 20, 2015 as a limited edition cassette as well as digital download. This release takes place in the same universe as 新しい日の誕生, but marks a mitosis of 2814 in which both artists explore a mirrored sonic realm as separate entities. A trial takes place. An event is triggered. The gateway opens. Transition. Rebirth.

“They will meet again.”

Celebrate summer with Andrew Broder & Crescent Moon

Crescent Moon (aka Alexei Moon Casselle) and Andrew Broder are restless souls. Both were raised and battle-tested in the burgeoning underground hip-hop scene of Minneapolis in the late-90’s – Caselle as an MC and Broder as a DJ/Turntablist- and both realized early on that they would have to push themselves out of that embryonic comfort zone and get weird with it. Casselle brought his razor-sharp and bone marrow-rich writing to the hazy throb of Kill the Vultures. Broder founded Fog, an awkwardly beautiful and jagged melding of turntable skronk and melodic song heartache. The pair have known and respected each other for damn near 20 years, and inevitably gravitated towards writing songs together in a basement, resulting in 6 songs for this self-titled EP Crescent Moon / Andrew Broder.

This is experimental and independent music. This is not indie rap or backpack rap. This is rap music made by two friends with a deep love for the form, and a vested interest in pushing it, and themselves to new places.

Crescent Moon / Andrew Broder cassettes are strictly limited to 100 copies, & will be shipping July 24. Grab your copy here

Start Your Morning With ‘Balanced Breakfast’

Dawn breaks over the horizon line. The shade of night slowly recedes and a new day is born. The gentle glow of the morning sun and a cool, soft breeze awaken the senses.

Early to rise, two old friends have met on common ground to share stories over the first meal of the day. The smell of incense & coffee hang thick in the air, conjuring fond memories of time spent together days gone by.

Like a two-headed quarter, Balanced Breakfast is a double A-side split of morning comfort from two of BARO’s longest-running players. Drawing Trees is the field-folk-collage project of Frank Broder, who composes vignettes of found sound, bursts of rapid-fire fingerpicking, and drapes of warm textured drone. Ant’lrd should be no stranger to those following the label, as his most recent long-player “Sunnup” proved to be a fan favorite and definitive portrait of his plunderphonic craft.

Both players have honed in on the tranquil nature of the early morning hours and the ritualistic preparation and enjoyment of breakfast. This collection has been lovingly crafted & presented to be just as much a part of your day as your morning cup of java. Limited to 100 copies on high-bias cobalt cassettes.

Start your day off right.

Onward & Upward!

Before any words are said, we here at Breathing & Receiving Oxygen would like to thank YOU, our loyal listeners and ferric oxide enthusiasts, for your continuing gusto & support. It goes without saying, but we would not be able to run this small & intricate machine without you.

Somehow, we are now half way through the year 2015. It’s been a delight so far, overwhelming feelings of positivity follow the spring rainfall as we ride our way into summer. 2015 has been a year of transition & change for us here at BARO. As you may (or may not) have noticed, our offices have split into two camps- BARO Chicago & now BARO Portland. So far, so good, our mitosis has allowed us more freedom in our day-to-day label operations.

Since it’s inception in 2009, BARO has always been the curatorial output of it’s founders- in digital form. Summer 2013 was when we decided to step up our game & bring our releases into the real world. Coinciding with a showcase at the Empty Bottle, BARO offered up our first batch of cassette tapes, including Odd Nosdam‘s now classic TRISH.  We have been incredibly lucky (& proud) to be able to coast by on our initial investment for two years now. It is now time to step it up once again.

In order to foster future growth of the label for our artists & fans alike, we are raising the bar on quality & output. We are raising our cassette prices by one dollar more as a result. What is your extra dollar buying you? We want to be able to offer our artists more options – professional mastering, 4+ panel J-cards, premium high-bias Chrome Plus cassettes, commissioned/licensed artwork, & bigger production runs to be able to provide more tapes for our artists to sell at shows/tours/personal sites. We want you, the fan, to have a richer, more immersed experience in our music & packaging. We are honored that the majority of our releases sell out quickly, but we would love to give more fans the opportunity to own & cherish the physical artifact. It’s a bit of a bummer when you are late to learn of a release by one of your favorite artists and the tapes/LPs are already sold out, with no re-press in sight. We believe our music should be accessible to all who wish to hear it, and you shouldn’t have to fork over triple or quadruple the retail price to obtain a secondhand copy from Discogs.

We don’t want to spoil anything just yet, but we have some truly killer releases in the chamber for the latter half of 2015. I leave you with the announcement of BARO47- “Balanced Breakfast” is a double-A-side split between longtime BARO projects Ant’lrd Drawing Trees. This release is Frank Broder’s first new work as Drawing Trees since 2013’s “Meadows Exist” and also first outing on magnetic tape. A whirlwind of Frank’s signature rapid-fire picking style amongst field recordings, familiar conversation, and warm sonic blankets. It is quite lovely if we do say so ourselves. Ant’lrd follows up this January’s sleeper hit Sunnup with three new sonic worlds, traversing familiar territory but exploring new paths. It it akin to a camping trip for your ears.

Thank you so much for reading. Balanced Breakfast will be released just in time for your independence day celebrations, and is available to pre-order here.

BARO proudly presents Olli Aarni’s shrouded opus “Peite” on magnetic tape!

We are so very pleased to announce Finnish sound painter Olli Aarni has joined the BARO family.

Originally self-released in an edition of 59 charmingly hand made tapes, we have brought Aarni’s late 2014 cassette suite Peite to the states. Simply described by the artist himself as “a blanket of fog,” Peite is a dense sonic adventure through and throughout. On the surface, Peite sounds like it could have been a compilation of unused Bernard Herrmann incidental music, film cues for a lost Hitchcock classic that were recently excavated from a landfill and caked in dirt & debris. Once you put the headphones on and crank your volume, it becomes so much more.

On side A, Aarni takes us through a foreign land, a humid & dense jungle, deeper & deeper. Hidden caves, pockets of undergrowth, thick plumes of vegetation populate our surroundings in our quest to find what we seek. As we travel downward into unexplored terrain, the layer of fog becomes more & more dense, enveloping our bodies in a comforting shroud of ferric oxide.

Suddenly, we reach a clearing.

Side B brings us shimmering slivers of sunlight, piercing through the fog which now lays dense atop our head. We have found what we were looking for all along, a safe place miles away from civilization where, for once, we can hear our thoughts and truly reflect. The gentle flow of water can be heard in the distance, but our sense of direction obscured prevents us from locating the source. As we settle in & lay in the dense tapestry of mist and moss, we become one with mother earth and the beauty that surrounds us.

Limited to 100 copies, Peite can be obtained on cassette here.

Julian Lynch joins the BARO family!

It is our honor to present lo-fi pop genius Julian Lynch’s long out-of-print debut LP “Orange You Glad” on magnetic tape. Recorded to four track around 2009 in and around New Jersey and Wisconson, this majestic collection of psychedelia sounds rich, warm, and just right on the cassette format.

Sounding nostalgic and sometimes melancholic, Julian’s first collection of tunes established the blueprint for his ethno-psychedelic pop sound further fleshed-out on his subsequent trio of LPs, Mare, Terra, and Lines. Orange You Glad is a rich tapestry of muted wah-guitar, bass clarinet, hand drums, and half-whispered vocals. Absolutely prefect tunes to celebrate the coming of spring by relaxing outside with your boombox or taking a nature hike with your walkman. Limited to 200 copies.

BARO proudly presents “Skyward Territories”

It is with much enthusiasm that we present our first four-way split- “Skyward Territories.” This release has been in the oven for quite some time. Bringing you fine-picked selections from both Chicago and Asheville, Skyward Territories is the first in a series of ethereal compilations showcasing the talent of our extended network.

Tape one is split between recent Chicago transplants, meditative synth wizard Kyle Landstra and modular drone evangelist Gardener. Mr. Landstra fires up his machines, easing the listener’s journey into a dome of pure modulated emotion. Sparks of pure nostalgia fly by as your consciousness is suspended by glowing orbs. Gardener continues the skyward journey with a steady pulse, climbing upwards upon layers of modular kraut meditations. Your body enters a stasis and is then vaporized by his pulsing rhythms and haunting wordless vocals.

Tape two compounds two of our favorite Asheville-based Bathetic Records veterans, Difference Clouds and Villages. Right away, Difference Clouds informs the listener they have arrived in another world. A sci-fi landscape of bright neon lights and flying machines await, as the mind is taken on a journey of futuristic, yet familiar scenes. Dark clouds form across the horizon, and the skies darken. Villages helps us begin our downward descent towards Earth. Melancholic clouds of textured piano and strings take us back into our dim candle-lit room where we began our journey.

This release has been carefully assembled by the BARO team and mastered by our main man Odd Nosdam for your listening pleasure. This release is one of a kind and limited.

Begin your ascent.
